India's Strong Total Fell Short in Raipur
India lost the Raipur ODI to South Africa despite putting up a total of 358 runs. The Proteas chased the target in 49.2 overs with 6 wickets in hand. It was a defeat that came after India won the previous match in Ranchi by 17 runs. Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan commented on the match and pointed at the main reason behind the loss.
Irfan Pathan's Take on the Defeat
Irfan Pathan wrote on X that India's failure in the last few overs while batting led directly to this defeat. Fans responded actively to his post. South Africa had won the toss and opted to bowl, sending India in to bat.
India Innings: Strong Middle-Order, Weak Finish by EOI
While Virat Kohli-102 from 93 balls-and Ruturaj Gaikwad-105 from 83 balls-centuries steadied the innings after a poor start to India's chase, KL Rahul made useful contributions with 66 runs off 43 deliveries and kept the scoreboard ticking. India reached 284/4 at the end of 40 overs.
However, South Africa's bowlers tightened their control in the final 10 overs. India scored only 74 runs in that phase and finished at 358/5 after 50 overs. Analysts say that 30 to 40 runs more could have altered the result of the match.
South Africa's Chase Led by Markram
South Africa built their chase on stable partnerships: Aiden Markram scored 110 from 98 balls. Matthew Breetzke added 68 runs from 64 balls, and Dewald Brevis made 54 from 34 balls. Captain Temba Bavuma chipped in with 46 runs, while Corbin Bosch played a useful knock of 29 runs toward the end. Their combined effort helped South Africa secure the win.
Other Causes for India's Defeat Dew on the field as well as quite a few fielding errors from India also contributed towards the result. With this win, South Africa levelled the series 1-1. The deciding third ODI will be played in Visakhapatnam this Saturday, December 6.
