Discussion at the UN
Pakistan got criticism at the UN after it raised the topic of Jammu and Kashmir during a session on peace. India reacted by mentioning political and security happenings in Pakistan. India made a comment on the balance of power in the leadership of Pakistan.
Pakistan's Statement
Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s representative to the UN, said that Pakistan promotes the cause of peace and stability in South Asia. He said, “For achieving the objectives of peace, the responsibility cannot rest on one side.” He said that the Jammu and Kashmir problem has not been resolved and requires a just solution. He also said that the Indus Waters Treaty has been unilaterally suspended by the Indian government.
India’s Response
India’s permanent representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, dismissed the allegations made by Pakistan. He said that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral to India. He explained further that Pakistan remains focused on actions aimed at threatening the people of India.
Indus Waters Treaty and Security Issues
"The Indus Waters Treaty was signed by the Indian government 65 years ago with a spirit of trust and cooperation," Harish said. "But they have broken that trust," he added, referring to the terrorist attacks and wars that Pakistan has unleashed on his country. "Several thousand Indian citizens have lost their lives in terrorist attacks related to Pakistani terrorism over the last four decades," he said, with a recent incident being the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
India’s Position on Terrorism
India has cited the continued instances of terrorism as the reason for the abrogation of the Indus Waters Treaty. Harish has said that India will deal with terrorism in any form.
Observations on Pakistan’s Domestic Affairs
Harish also spoke about the politics of Pakistan. Regarding this, he mentioned the arrest of ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, and the redirection of key powers to the Chief of Defence Forces, Asim Munir.
