India Women Secure T20 Series With Third Straight Win

The Indian women's cricket team continued its performance against Sri Lanka in the T20 matches. India won the third match of the T20 series by eight wickets and gave an unbeatble lead of 3-0 in the five-match series. This match was held in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, with only two more matches left.

Disciplined bowling restricts Sri Lanka

  • First, Sri Lanka opted to bat and could manage only 112 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. The Indian bowling lineup started dominating the innings right from the beginning. Renuka Singh bowled well and took four overs, one maiden, conceded 21, and picked four wickets. Deepti Sharma also supported her and picked three wickets for 18 runs.
  • Sri Lanka got a good start but failed to maintain the momentum even after the initial overs. Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu was gone in the fifth over for 3 runs. Then, Renuka got rid of players like Hasini Perera, Harshitha Samarawickrama, and Nilakshika, reducing Sri Lanka to 45 for 4 in the 10th over. Then, Kavisha Dilhari and Imesha added a few runs to the score, but Sri Lanka was again restricted by Deepti and Renuka. A late knock by Kaushini enabled Sri Lanka to breach the barrier of 100 runs.

Shafali Picks Up The Pace

  • India chased the target with ease and reached 115/2 in 13.2 overs. Shafali Verma scored an aggressive knock and remained undefeated on 79 runs from 42 balls. This marked the second consecutive fifty in the tournament.
  • Smriti Mandhana was bowled out for just 1 run, while Jemimah Rodrigues contributed 9 before her dismissal. Harmanpreet Kaur remained unbeaten on 21 to help her partner Shafali to win by chasing the target. Kavisha Dilhari took both wickets for India and returned with figures of 2/18.

Deepti Sharma Ties World Record

Deepti Sharma marked a historic achievement while playing this match. With three wickets, she tied a world record for women’s T20 internationals. Deepti has a total of 151 wickets, just like Megan Schutt, an Aussie cricketer. Deepti rendered this performance in only 131 matches, averaging 18.73. She is also at number three behind Claire Pollock, a New Zealand cricketer, and Anisa Majeed, a Pakistani cricketer, who are at the number one position due to more matches.

Captain's Opinion Regarding Series Performance

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur stated that they tried to play more aggressively in T20 cricket after the World Cup. She emphasized that bowling is very essential in T20 cricket. She appreciated the contribution made by the bowling department to help India win the series. She was impressed by Renuka Singh, especially when they were up against Sri Lanka, who have strong top-order batters. The fourth T20 will be held in Thiruvananthapuram. It is scheduled for Sunday.
