The uncertainty around the India–Pakistan match in the T20 World Cup has ended. The match will be played as scheduled after the Pakistan government withdrew its decision to boycott the fixture.
Pakistan Withdraws Boycott Decision
The Pakistan government declared on Monday that it has reached satisfactory results from its previous talks. The national team confirmed its upcoming match against India after receiving requests from multiple friendly nations. The match is scheduled to take place in Colombo on the 15th of this month.
Role of Cricket Boards and Governments
- The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and International Cricket Council (ICC) held discussions during the past few days. The Sri Lankan and Emirates cricket boards urged the PCB to reconsider its earlier decision.
- BCB President Aminul Islam stated that he personally appealed to Pakistan to proceed with the match. The Pakistan government confirmed that Sri Lankan Prime Minister Anura Kumar spoke with Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif regarding the issue.
ICC Decisions and Future Considerations
- The ICC rejected the PCB’s proposal to organize a triangular series involving Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The PCB proposed the series to recover financial losses that Bangladesh incurred because it failed to participate in the World Cup.
- The PCB also requested the revival of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan. The ICC informed that it does not possess jurisdiction over decisions related to bilateral series.
- The ICC expressed its willingness to give Bangladesh the rights to host the upcoming Under-19 World Cup. The ICC also confirmed that it will not impose any sanctions on Bangladesh for declining to play the T20 World Cup in India.
