Sri Lankan President Thanks Pakistan For Revising Decision On India Match

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 match between India and Pakistan will now proceed because Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's request to reverse Pakistan's earlier decision. 

Decision Change Ahead of T20 World Cup Match

  • Pakistan announced its decision to avoid the group-stage match against India. The allied nations demanded that Pakistan should change its decision which the country later accepted. The match will proceed according to its original schedule.
  • Dissanayake announced the news through an X (Twitter) post. He expressed his excitement to watch the India–Pakistan match that will occur on the 15th of this month in Colombo.

Statement from the Sri Lankan President

  • The President thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for allowing the Pakistan team to participate in the match. Sri Lanka holds co-host status for the tournament and appreciates all parties who have worked together with them.
  • The International Cricket Council organized the event while he recognized their efforts. He remembered the 1996 World Cup when India and Pakistan played matches in Colombo despite security concerns that prevented other teams from participating. He said Sri Lanka values the support shown during that period.

Official Confirmation from Pakistan

The Pakistan government issued an announcement on Monday which stated that it had retracted its previous decision. The government received approval after it declared that it was satisfied with the results of diplomatic discussions and the appeals made by friendly countries.
