Former BCB Official Criticizes Leadership Over T20 World Cup 2026 Withdrawal

The general secretary of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) from the past Syed Ashraful Haque raised concerns about the recent decisions which the board made. He stated that BCB president Aminul Islam was influenced by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Naqvi during discussions related to the T20 World Cup 2026.

Allegations of External Influence

  • Syed Ashraful Haque said that Aminul Islam acted under pressure. He described Aminul as honest but inexperienced in handling political pressure. According to him Naqvi controlled the decision-making process.
  • He questioned the outcome of following that advice. He said Bangladesh did not gain any benefit from the move. He stated that cricket administration needs dedication together with unbiased decision-making.

Concerns About Diplomatic and Cricket Relations

  • Syed also referred to earlier government decisions that affected relations with India. He said those actions lacked strong justification. He stressed that Bangladesh cricket depends on support from Indian administrators.
  • He recalled the period when Jagmohan Dalmiya played a major role in regional cricket affairs. The Bangladesh cricket board received international recognition during that period. He stated that current developments have affected the country’s reputation in international cricket circles.

ICC Decision and Tournament Withdrawal

  • The Bangladesh Cricket Board requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to schedule its matches in Sri Lanka. The board cited security concerns for its team in India.
  • The ICC reviewed the request and did not find any security issues in India. The ICC rejected the venue change because of this. Bangladesh later withdrew from the T20 World Cup 2026.
  • The ICC allowed Scotland to replace Bangladesh in the tournament. After discussions with both the PCB and the BCB, the ICC confirmed that no sanctions would be imposed on Bangladesh.
