U.S. Visa Policy Changes And Their Impact On India And China

Decline in Visa Issuance

  • The Washington Post reports that current U.S. immigration rules have led to decreased visa approvals which started with the policies Trump established during his presidency.
  • The report shows that India and China faced the largest impact. During the first eight months of 2025, the United States issued 250,000 fewer visas compared to the same period in 2024.

Official Data from the U.S. State Department

The United States Department of State released data in early March which confirms the decreasing trend.

  • Total visas dropped by 11 percent between January and August 2025
  • The comparison is with the same months in 2024
  • The data includes both permanent and temporary visas

These visas are usually granted to:

  • International students
  • Skilled workers and job seekers
  • Family members of legal residents

The 11 percent figure does not include tourist visas but their numbers decreased during this time period.

Government’s Position on Immigration Policy

  • The U.S. administration stated that the policy focuses on national interest and security.
  • Abigail Jackson said that the government prioritizes American citizens in all decisions. She added that the policy aligns with election promises.
  • The State Department established that the government needs to implement strict screening processes. The government conducts thorough assessments of foreign nationals who seek entry into the United States.
