Shreyas Iyer Faces Fine For Slow Over-Rate Violation

Second Offense in IPL 2026 Season

  • The Punjab Kings achieved their second victory during the 2026 IPL season. The league officials assessed penalties against the team after their game against the Chennai Super Kings because of their inadequate over-rate performance.
  • Shreyas Iyer received a fine which totaled ₹24 lakhs. The penalty applies because this is the team's second violation of the current season. The IPL Committee confirmed the decision under the official rules.
  • The team issued fines to other players in the team. The players must pay either ₹6 lakhs or 25% of their match fee which is the lesser amount. All players must follow this rule which includes the Impact Player.

IPL Rules on Slow Over-Rate

The IPL Governing Council explained the decision under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct. The rule establishes penalties which teams must face when they fail to maintain necessary over-rate during matches.

The rule establishes these main points:

  • The captain receives increased fines for his second violation
  • The team members must also pay monetary fines
  • All players who participate in the match must follow this rule

Updated Rules for Repeated Offenses

The IPL changed its rules before the previous season. A captain faced a one-match suspension after three slow over-rate offenses. The revised regulations eliminated this suspension.

The current system uses financial penalties to determine consequences.

  • The third offense becomes a ₹36 lakh fine which applies to the captain.
  • Current regulations do not impose a match suspension.
  • The players can lose up to half of their match fees.

The changes work to maintain discipline without requiring player suspensions.
