NITES Raises Concern Over Job Losses
- NITES raised its concerns about increasing job cuts which scientists discovered through their studies on workplace layoffs in the technology field. The group linked this trend to the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- NITES used Oracle as its current case study. The company terminated approximately 30000 workers throughout the world while 12000 employees from India lost their jobs. The association stated that companies should focus on employee upskilling instead of immediate job cuts.
Demand for Upskilling and Policy Support
Harpreet Singh Saluja, President of NITES, said companies must take responsibility for their workforce. He explained that firms investing heavily in AI should also invest in training programs for employees.
He emphasized key points:
- Layoffs should be a last option
- Employees should receive reskilling and upskilling support
- Companies should ensure fair treatment during workforce changes
NITES requested government help as their solution to their problem. The group created a request which demanded a comprehensive framework to protect white-collar workers in private organizations.
Need for Clear Layoff Guidelines
NITES proposed the creation of formal rules for layoffs. The proposed rules should establish:
- Termination contracts require employees to provide advance notice
- Employers must offer better termination benefits
- Employers must take responsibility for their layoffs
- Employers must establish guidelines for both forced resignations and mass layoffs
Saluja observed that numerous private sector workers do not possess adequate legal safeguards. He said clear guidelines can improve job security and reduce uncertainty.
Rising Layoffs Across the Tech Industry
Recent data shows a broader trend across the global tech sector. Companies such as Oracle, Google, and Meta have reduced their workforce.
According to Layoffs.fyi:
- Over 70 tech companies have announced layoffs
- Around 40,480 employees lost jobs this year
Experts linked these layoffs to:
- The pandemic emergency created excessive hiring needs which led to overstaffing
- Companies needed to modify their employee count
- Organizations started relying more on AI and machine automation technologies
The layoff process created negative effects for both workers and their workplace environments. The National Institute for Employment Security showed how job termination affects workers as a result. The group stated that sudden job loss affects:
- Mental health
- Financial stability
- Family security
Saluja identified certain layoff methods as damaging to employees. He explained that employers use this method to terminate workers by sending them dismissal notifications during early morning hours which then results in instant termination of their computer system access. He said such actions can lead to:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Loss of confidence
He also claimed that some companies reduce staff to improve financial appearance for shareholders, even when profits remain stable.
Advice for Employees
The National Institute for Employment Security NITES advised workers to start preparing themselves because job market changes will occur. The group suggested:
- Continuous skill development
- Learning new technologies
- Understanding employee rights
These steps will enable workers to handle industrial transformations while they protect their employment prospects.
