Delimitation: Amit Shah Details Changes In Lok Sabha Seats
  • The Indian Home Minister Amit Shah announced that southern states will receive equitable treatment during the delimitation process. He announced that multiple states will gain additional Lok Sabha seats.
  • He announced that Andhra Pradesh will experience an increase from 25 seats to 38 seats. The seat count for Telangana will increase from 17 seats to 26 seats. The seat total for Karnataka will rise from 28 seats to 42 seats. The seat count for Tamil Nadu will grow from 39 to 59 seats. The seat count for Kerala will increase from 20 to 30 seats.
  • He explained that upcoming seat increases will depend on how population distribution across different areas develops. He stated that southern states will maintain their population-based representation.
  • Amit Shah made these remarks during a Lok Sabha discussion. The discussion focused on two topics which were the womens reservation bill and the delimitation process.

Shah’s Clarification on Representation

  • Amit Shah declared that Telangana possesses 3.13% of all Lok Sabha seats at present. He announced that this percentage will increase to 3.18% after the delimitation process.
  • He announced that the five southern states currently maintain 129 seats. This total represents 23.76% of all available seats. He predicted that the total will increase to 195 seats which represents 23.97% of the available seats.
  • He questioned how this modification could be considered unjust toward the southern states. He accused opposition parties of disseminating false information while generating public anxiety.
  • He announced that 33% of seats will be allocated as women-only positions. He revealed that women will have additional chances for representation if they participate in general elections.

DMK Plans Legal Action

  • The DMK said it will approach the Supreme Court if the Delimitation Bill is passed in Parliament.
  • DMK legal affairs secretary N. R. Elango said the party is ready for a legal fight to protect southern states’ interests.
  • He said the Union Home Minister gave only a verbal assurance in Parliament. He said no clear protection was written into the bill.
  • He added that this lack of written provision creates legal grounds for court action.

Uddhav Thackeray Calls for Immediate Women’s Quota

  • Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray demanded immediate implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
  • He also said that the delimitation exercise should be put on hold for now.
