New Cell Phone Technology Enables You to Watch TV Without Data or WiFi

Two cellular companies are set to launch handsets that will be able to support Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology. This technology allows one to watch live TV on a cell phone without depending on cellular data or WiFi connection.

HMD Global, known to produce Nokia phones, and Freestream Technologies, Tejas Networks, and Sinclair are collaborating to bring a phone that supports D2M. A feature phone is to be issued by Lava International with the same technology Both companies made the announcement at WAVES 2025.

Major Partnerships and Hardware Facts

HMD's D2M phone will also be on display at the WAVES 2025 event held at the Jio World Center in Mumbai between May 1 for four days. Their new feature phone was a result of a joint collaboration between Lava and Tejas Networks as well as a contribution of their own R&D team.

  • Antenna: UHF antenna to pick TV signals

What is Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) Technology?

D2M technology allows for live TV watching directly on mobile phones, as FM radio is listened to. It is fully ready in India and does not require any internet or WiFi to be used.

The D2M service is currently under trial in a few cities. The government will utilize it not just for entertainment but also for broadcasting emergency messages.
