Swiggy has suspended the service of its Genie service, the company's premium pickup and drop logistics solution majorly due to COVID-19. Even though the service had been operational in around 70 cities, people in the cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi are not able to find the service on the Swiggy app. Where the feature remains visible, a message with the text "Temporarily unavailable" is displayed on selection.
Even though the company did not send out an official statement, Swiggy shed light on the user queries via social media that the suspension was temporary. However, the firm has not provided a time period or information as to when and where the service will resume.
Service Suspended Without Pre-Notice
Swiggy Genie was meant for intra-city delivery between two points. Following the April 2020 launch, it expanded to over 70 cities step by step with a great service option for users who required urgent logistics assistance. The service has recently either disappeared from the app or shows a temporary suspend notification, especially in India's top cities.
The abrupt suspension has put the usual customers in a dilemma since Swiggy never gave any advance notice or announcement. The uncertainty has led to doubts as to why the service is being closed down for good or is this just a temporary halt. Without any word from the company, one can't say whether Genie services in small cities are on or not.
Temporary Suspension, No Timeline for Return
Swiggy responded to alarm only in the form of answers to direct customer questions on social media, assuring that Genie suspension is temporary. Still, it did not indicate when the service will resume or where it will resume first. Such vagueness has generated speculations among users and industry commentators regarding the long-term sustainability of Swiggy's logistics expansion.
The Genie service had also been disrupted earlier. Swiggy paused the offering in 2022 during a time of strong demand for food delivery and its instant-commerce offshoot, Instamart. Such demand conditions might have been a factor in the pause now as the firm realigns resources to grow other high-demand offerings.
