Education Department Suspends Harvard Research Grants
The Trump administration has suspended specific federal funding to Harvard University. U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed that federal research grants to the university have been suspended. She said that Harvard had been previously notified to change specific policies. Despite this, the university failed to comply, and as a result, funding was cut and tax breaks eliminated.
Harvard will have no new funding until it meets the needs set by the federal government, McMahon added. She made sure to specify that the suspension is only applied to research grants. Federal support of student tuition costs will remain unaffected.
Government Questions University Behavior
McMahon criticized Harvard for injuring the system of higher education. She lashed out at the university for receiving foreign students who took part in demonstrations against the U.S. government. The Department of Education also released statements about the continuing investigations into complaints of racial discrimination against Harvard.
Harvard Defends Its Position and Academic Freedom
Harvard University strongly opposed the action of the federal government. Harvard President Alan Garber declared that the reduction in funding is a reaction to Harvard's defiance of what he termed "illegal demands." He added that Harvard would stand firm against pressure and maintain its principles.
White House Demands Disclosure of Student Records
The White House informed Harvard last week that new foreign student admissions would be permitted only if the university provided records of illegal or violent offenses committed by such students. The administration warned that it would withdraw Harvard's privilege to accept new foreign students unless it gave such records.
University Stands Firm on Legal Principles
Harvard replied that it would not agree to these terms. The university reaffirmed its support for legal process and constitutional liberties. It urged the federal government to act according to the law and respect institutional independence.
