Google Announces Additional Layoffs During Internal Restructuring

200 Workers Terminated in Business Unit

Google has officially announced another wave of layoffs in the course of its continued restructuring process. In this case, approximately 200 workers from Google's worldwide business organization have been terminated. The unit oversees sales and partnerships. The news was reported by The Information, quoting sources close to the situation.

Continued Strides to Enhance Efficiency

The firm said that the layoffs are a part of small restructuring aimed at enhancing customer service. This is the second layoff incident within a month. Back in April, Google had laid off employees from its platform and devices teams. Those employees were part of teams developing Android, Pixel phones, and the Chrome browser.

Broader Layoff Pattern Two-Year Period

Google has undertaken a number of layoffs in the last two years. In December 2023, Google eliminated approximately 10% of its managers, directors, and vice presidents. In February 2024, the company made layoffs in the HR and cloud divisions. The actions were aimed at cutting operational expenses.

CEO's Earlier Comments on Productivity

Google CEO Sundar Pichai, in 2022, mentioned that 20% of the employees at the company needed to boost productivity. Consistent with that, Google fired 12,000 employees in 2023. All these come at a time when Google is being increasingly challenged by competitors, such as OpenAI, that are moving into the search engine business.

Layoffs During Regulatory Pressure in the U.S.

The announcement of these recent layoffs comes as the U.S. government, led by Donald Trump, is clamping down on the hiring of foreign professionals. This change in regulation is one more hurdle that companies such as Google have to overcome.
