Social Media Action Taken Against Chinese and Turkish Media Networks
India has blocked the social media handle of Global Times, a Chinese state-run media agency. The handle was blocked as the agency presented false information on Operation Sindoor. When attempted to be opened, users encounter a message explaining that it is withheld in India.
Another Chinese media outlet, Xinhua, also had their social media account suspended. The account of Turkey's TRT World was also blocked in India.
Background on Operation Sindoor
The Indian Army conducted the Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror attack. Terror camps in Pakistan were targeted and destroyed under this operation, reports confirm.
India Responds to Misinformation
The Indian Embassy in China directly replied to Global Times on social media. It stated: "Dear Global Times, please verify facts before publishing." The statement noted that pro-Pakistan pages were disseminating false reports on Operation Sindoor. It also indicated that posting unverified information is irresponsible.
Fact-Checking Efforts by Indian Authorities
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) is also making efforts to combat online disinformation. Once Operation Sindoor commenced, PIB began fact-checking and debunking false reports associated with the operation.
