Trump Speaks Out Against Apple's Plans to Expand in India
President Donald Trump revealed that he personally asked Apple CEO Tim Cook not to relocate the production units to India. Trump announced that he called Cook and informed him that he was opposed to the company's expansion in India.
"I had a little trouble with Tim Cook yesterday," Trump declared. "He started the production in India. I mentioned to him that I didn't want this. So, Apple will be producing more here in the United States."
As per the notes, the meeting took place while Cook was present in Qatar. Trump even stated that India has very high taxes on American goods
Apple's Current Production Plan
Owing to differences in the trade, Apple has transferred some of the production from China. India is a potential manufacturing hub for Apple to reduce their reliance on China. To this end, Foxconn and Tata Electronics have been grounded as they make iPhones in India.
According to Tim Cook, the majority of the iPhones sold in the U.S. in the June quarter would be coming from India. Apple will still import goods such as MacBooks, AirPods, and Apple Watches from Vietnam.
Tariff Negotiations Between India and the U.S.
Trump has insisted that India has even gone on to adopt a free-tariff policy for the majority of the goods coming from the U.S. "The Indian government has basically given us the deal with all the items having zero duty," Trump mentioned.
The trade talks between the U.S. and India are ongoing. Trump had earlier stated on April 30 that negotiations were ongoing and there were chances of the final deal occurring soon.
