Turkey: Celebi Clarifies – No Ties With Turkish President's Family

Background of the Issue

India is experiencing protests against Turkey for its pro-Pakistan stance, which is blamed for fomenting terrorism. Following this, there are increasing demands to ban Turkish goods and services in the country.

Government Action Against Celebi

In this regard, the Indian government has cancelled the operation licenses of Celebi Airport Services India Limited, an airport services firm that provides airport services like cargo handling. The cancellation was made by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on grounds of security.

Celebi Makes Official Statement

After the cancellation, Celebi made an official public statement. It explained that:

  • It is not a Turkish company.
  • It has no relation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan or his relatives.
  • It is not owned or controlled by the President's daughter, Sumeyye Erdogan.

Ownership and Political Neutrality

Celebi clarified:

  • It is privately owned by the Celebi family.
  • There are no political associations or affiliations.
  • 65% of the shares in the parent company are held by institutional investors based in Canada, the US, the UK, Singapore, UAE, and Western Europe.

Regulatory Compliance in India

The company asserted that:

  • It is governed by Indian aviation regulations.
  • It abides by all corporate governance, neutrality, and transparency regulations.
  • Its activities are audited on a periodic basis by BCAS, CISF, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Effect on Indian Airports

Celebi had operations at nine Indian airports, such as Hyderabad and Chennai. Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed that alternative provisions have been planned for cargo and passenger services with the cancellation of the permit.
