Ukrainian President Commends Operation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that an attack by drones within Russia was a success. He described the operation as a "brilliant operation" in a series of updates on the social media platform X.
Zelensky said that the operation was carried out by the Ukrainian army and was given the code name "Spider Web." He added that the attack was on military equipment and had destroyed 40 Russian aircraft.
Details Provided by Ukrainian Authorities
Zelensky emphasized that the operation was conducted in its entirety within Russian territory. He further pointed out that the forces took out equipment that had been used in past attacks on Ukraine. He explained that the loss was tremendous for Russia and appreciated Ukraine's security services for their work.
Operation Coincided With Timed Peace Talks
The drone attack was carried out just prior to planned peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, Turkey. Ukrainian authorities stated drones were brought into Russia in shipping containers. This enabled the drones to fly 4,000 kilometers deep within Russian borders to reach their targets.
Russian Airplanes and Airfields Targeted
Ukraine reportedly shot down 41 Russian aircraft in attacks on airfields in the Irkutsk region. Russian media also reported drone strikes in the Ryazan and Murmansk regions.
