Government Sets New Temperature Limits For Air Conditioners

New Rules Aim to Reduce Power Consumption

The central government plans to introduce new temperature limits for air conditioners. This move is aimed at lowering electricity use across the country.

Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said the minimum temperature for ACs will be fixed at 20 degrees Celsius. The maximum will be set at 28 degrees Celsius.

Uniform Standards for AC Usage

Khattar explained that these standards will help standardize AC use. The government expects this change to reduce high electricity consumption. He pointed out that many homes and offices currently run ACs below 20 degrees.

Changes in AC Manufacturing Standards

Currently, some ACs offer minimum temperature settings of 16 or 18 degrees. Under the new rules, manufacturers must set the minimum at 20 degrees. This change will apply to all new AC units sold.

Survey Data Supports the Policy

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) conducted a survey on AC usage. Results show that most users set ACs at 20 to 21 degrees. Experts recommend settings between 24 and 25 degrees to save more power.

Benefits of Higher Temperature Settings

According to the data, raising the temperature by 1 degree saves about 6% in electricity. The government believes this can help lower electricity bills and reduce carbon emissions.
