Ukraine Offers Monthly Payments For Volunteers Who Help Counter Drone Threats

Ukraine has launched a new initiative to counter Russian drone strikes. The program enables trained civilians to assist in detecting and destroying Russian drones. The scheme runs parallel with the conventional military forces.

As per reports in the media, Ukraine's Defense Ministry has suggested monthly allowances of around Rs. 2.2 lakh (about $2,600) for the participants. The program has been approved by the Ukrainian Cabinet. The government spokesman Taras Melnichuk has confirmed the details.

The two-year duration of the program will operate under martial law. The funding will be sourced from local government budgets. Eligible persons are volunteers and members of paramilitary units who have experience with handling drones. They will deploy unmanned aerial vehicles and weapons to shoot down arriving drones.

Drone deployment is now a major factor in the Russia-Ukraine war. Drones are used to spy, disrupt air defense, and attack infrastructure. Iran produces Shahed drones, which Russia has employed against energy infrastructure in Ukraine.

In turn, Ukraine is increasing its own drone activity. Recently, Ukraine carried out a massive drone assault on Russia, as was reported under the code name "Spider Web." The government hopes that the inclusion of civilians in defense activities will bolster its resistance to air attacks.
