WhatsApp Adds Ads to Its Platform
WhatsApp is now showing ads. The move is a new wave for the app, which had no ads when it launched. WhatsApp announced the update through a blog post. The ads will be displayed in the Updates tab.
Where the Ads Will Be Shown
The ads will show in two areas within the Updates tab:
- Channels
- Status
As per WhatsApp, around 1.5 billion people view the Updates tab every day. The firm indicates that this will assist admins, businesses, and organizations in growing using the platform. Three key ad-related features will be present.
Ad Types Introduced
- Channel Subscription: People can now subscribe to their favorite channels for a monthly fee.
- Promoted Channels: Admins can pay to promote their channels and be more visible under trending channels.
- Ads in Status: Aside from personal status, people will also view business statuses.
Ads Will Remain in Updates Tab Only
WhatsApp confirmed that ads will not show up in individual chats, messages, or calls. These will remain ad-free and end-to-end encrypted.
Privacy and User Data
WhatsApp will only receive basic information such as:
- Country of the user
- City of the user
- Language of the user
Phone numbers won't be shared or sold to advertisers.
No Launch Date Announced
WhatsApp hasn't announced when these features will be rolled out.
