Direct Satellite Internet for Smartphones
Vodafone Idea has joined hands with AST SpaceMobile, an American satellite maker, to provide satellite internet directly to smartphones. AST SpaceMobile is rival to Elon Musk's SpaceX. It is the first organization that has constructed a space-based mobile broadband network. Vodafone Idea informed that this network would cater to commercial as well as government clients.
Strategic Partnership for Connectivity
The firms have entered into a strategic alliance with a view to providing mobile services to underserved areas in India. Based on Vodafone Idea, AST has been able to provide voice and video calls on conventional mobile phones through satellites.
No Additional Hardware or Software Required
This cellular space network will operate without additional hardware or software installation. Vodafone's local network will be merged with AST's satellite technology to provide uninterrupted mobile services.
4G and 5G from Space
AST SpaceMobile Chief Commercial Officer Chris Ivory explained that India's huge telecoms market is perfect for showcasing satellite broadband. The aim is to increase mobile coverage and eradicate connectivity gaps. The service will bring 4G and 5G directly to the smartphones from space.
Comparison with Starlink Services
Elon Musk's Starlink has gotten the nod from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to provide services in India. But users need to buy special equipment in order to access Starlink's services. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have tied up with Starlink, which controls more than 70% of India's telecom market share. In contrast to Starlink, AST plans to offer mobile internet without requiring special devices.
Launch Timeline Not Disclosed
Vodafone Idea has also not specified when the service will start. A spokesperson of the company revealed that they will make the announcement when the time is appropriate. Vodafone PLC, the promoter of Vodafone Idea, has already entered into an agreement with AST SpaceMobile.
