ABS To Become Mandatory For All Two-Wheelers From January Next Year

Government Plans to Cut Two-Wheeler Accidents

The Central Government intends to introduce Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) as a compulsory feature in all two-wheelers retailed in India. The norm is likely to be applicable from next January 1. As per sources, the Union Ministry of Road Transport will soon issue a notification regarding the same.

Currently, ABS is mandatory for two-wheelers above 150 cc. The government now wishes to make all models, including entry-level two-wheelers, mandatory. Entry-level two-wheelers are responsible for approximately 75% of road accidents, as per government data. In 2022, 20% of road accidents occurred on account of two-wheelers.

ABS Rule May Lead to Price Hike

If ABS becomes mandatory for all models, production costs will rise. Manufacturers are likely to pass on the cost to buyers. Industry estimates show entry-level two-wheeler prices may increase by ₹2,500 to ₹5,000. However, experts agree that ABS helps prevent accidents and improves road safety.

What is ABS?

ABS means Anti-Lock Braking System. ABS is a safety feature in a vehicle. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up when the vehicle brakes hard. This keeps the vehicle under control and lowers the chances of skidding.
