Russia Condemns Attacks on Iran's Nuclear Sites

Russia has denounced the latest Israeli and American attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. The government declared that Russia's backing of Iran has not shifted. The Kremlin reaffirmed its desire to develop warmer ties with Tehran.

Kremlin Reacts to Criticism of Feeble Support

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov discussed Russia's position. Critics said strategic ally Iran was not receiving firm support from Moscow. Peskov indicated some players are attempting to undermine the Russia-Iran relationship. He highlighted a recent Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Araghchi complimented Russia's role as important.

Putin Explains Neutral Position

President Putin addressed questions regarding why Russia did not interfere more directly. He explained that some 2 million former Soviet Union citizens, who are now Russian citizens, reside in Israel. He characterized Israel as virtually a Russian-speaking nation. From this basis, he said, Russia is opting to be neutral.

Support for Peaceful Nuclear Program

Putin also responded to allegations Russia is not committed to its friends. He explained that those accusations were intended to stir up trouble. He claimed there is no definitive evidence Iran is developing nuclear weapons. He further claimed Russia had notified Israel of its stance. Putin reaffirmed Russia's continued support for Iran's civilian nuclear program.
