Cargo Ship With 3,000 Cars Submerges In North Pacific Ocean

Ship Sank Following Fire Accident Weeks Previous

A cargo ship carrying 3,000 vehicles sank in the North Pacific Ocean. The vessel was headed to Mexico. Fire had occurred on the vessel a number of weeks prior to its sinking.

Electric Vehicles Among Those on Board

The ship sank off the Aleutian Islands, which are located off Alaska. It was transporting 800 electric cars. Zodiac Maritime, a London-based shipping company, operated the vessel and confirmed the sinking in a public release.

No Significant Pollution Found

An American Coast Guard spokesperson reported that no significant pollution was found. Two salvage tugs with pollution control equipment were dispatched to the scene.

Fire Accident and Rescue Operation

The Coast Guard learned about the fire for the first time on June 3. There were 22 crew members on board at that time. The crew members escaped by using lifeboats. A passing merchant ship took them in.

Smoke Produced by Electric Vehicles

The authorities and the ship operators confirmed that the smoke from the fire was primarily produced by the electric vehicles, which were kept at the rear of the ship.
