Thailand Prime Minister Suspended After Phone Call With Cambodian Leader

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Temporarily Removed From Office

Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn has been suspended following a phone call to a Cambodian leader that raised legal issues. Conservative senators charged she had crossed cabinet ethics by discussing internal policies with Cambodia. The court took the complaint, ruling there were possible constitutional infractions. Her suspension will last until the final decision. If the court finds against her, she may be ousted from office permanently.

Details of the Controversial Call

The call was made to Cambodia's former Prime Minister Hun Sen. Although he vacated office in 2023, Hun Sen retains political power. His son, Hun Manet, now heads the Cambodian administration.

During the call, Paetongtarn allegedly called Hun Sen "Uncle" and revealed sensitive information regarding her political circumstances. She stated that Thailand's army commander was against her. This call was subsequently leaked to the public.

Legal Action and Suspension

The leaked call prompted rapid backlash. Conservative senators initiated a legal suit, arguing that talking about national issues with an outside individual defied constitutional law. The court then suspended Paetongtarn subject to its inquiry.

She can be ousted from office permanently if she is found guilty.
