China Says Dalai Lama Cannot Decide His Successor

China Reiterates Its Position on Reincarnation

China reaffirmed that the Dalai Lama cannot determine how his future successor will be elected. The Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, conveyed this message on X.

He noted that in Tibetan Buddhism, the method of electing a successor is governed by an old system of reincarnation. It has been practiced for almost 700 years in the "Living Buddha" system. In other Chinese provinces, there are different traditions of reincarnation.

Xu affirmed that the 14th Dalai Lama is within this ancient system. The Dalai Lama neither initiated nor directs the tradition, according to him. He continued that the Dalai Lama cannot start and end the reincarnation cycle.
