Trump Accuses Brazil of Targeting Bolsonaro

U.S. President Donald Trump declared a 50% tariff on Brazilian products. He claimed that Brazil is harassing former President Jair Bolsonaro. Trump recently threatened that nations favorable to BRICS and against him could face additional tariffs. He is going to impose an additional 10% tariff on such countries.

Lula Rejects Trump's Accusations

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded that the world doesn't need an emperor. Trump denounced Brazil's actions in a letter sent to Lula. He insisted that Brazil halt its probe against Bolsonaro. Trump also stated the U.S. will start auditing Brazil's trade policies.

Tariffs Effective August 1

The new tariffs will begin on August 1. Trump had accused Brazil of damaging free elections. He warned against retaliation because it would add to tensions.

Lula Promises Legal Reaction

Lula, writing on X, stated that Brazil will retaliate under global trade law. Brazil had exported 4 million tons of steel to the U.S. in 2024, making it the second-largest exporter after Canada.

U.S. Embassy Backs Bolsonaro

The U.S. Embassy in Brazil also released a statement in favor of Bolsonaro and his family. It claimed they are important allies of the U.S. and condemned political violence against them. The Brazilian government responded aggressively and called the U.S. ambassador to justify the statement.

Bolsonaro Faces Legal Trouble

Bolsonaro lost the election in Brazil in 2020. He is suspected to have been involved in violent occurrences during that time. He and 33 others are being investigated. The case will be dealt with by the Brazilian Supreme Court. If convicted of coup plotting, he would face legal action according to Brazilian law.
