ED To Investigate 29 Celebrities In Betting App Promotion Case

Enforcement Directorate Registers Case Against Film Stars and Influencers

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed cases against 29 people, including actors and influencers, for promoting illegal betting apps. Some of the actors mentioned include Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Manchu Lakshmi, Prakash Raj, Nidhi Agarwal, Ananya Nagalla, and television host Sreemukhi. The investigation was based on a First Information Report (FIR) registered by Cyberabad Police.

Police Filed FIR Under Multiple Legal Provisions

The Telangana Police have already put charges on TV anchors, actors, YouTubers, and other social media influencers who have been behind promoting these illegal betting websites. The case names big stars like Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda, Prakash Raj, Manchu Lakshmi, and Nidhi Agarwal, among several others.

Other names that have been mentioned are:

  • YSRCP representative Shyamala
  • TV actors: Srimukhi, Varshini Soundararajan, Siri Hanumanthu
  • Influencers: Vasanthi Krishnan, Shobha Shetty, Amrutha Choudhary, Nayani Pavani
  • Content creators: Neha Pathan, Pandu, Padmavati, Imran Khan, Vishnupriya, Harshasai
  • Online personalities: Bhaiya Sunny Yadav, Tasty Teja, Ritu Choudhary, Bandaru Supreeta

Legal Sections and Allegations

FIR was lodged under:

  • Sections 318(4), 112, read with 49 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)
  • Sections 3, 3(a), and 4 of the Telangana Gaming Act
  • Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and 2008

The ED will go ahead with its investigation on the basis of this FIR, registered by the Hyderabad Police.

Charges of Paid Endorsements and Public Injury

As per the FIR, the celebrities and social media influencers endorsed these prohibited apps, which provided the facility for illegal gambling. The report has accused most of them of taking hefty commissions and money for promoting these sites.

The police have also been approached with complaints connecting financial crisis and suicides with losses on these apps. A number of families are said to be facing severe financial problems after availing these services.
