Tesla Opens First Showroom in Mumbai

Tesla, the premier American electric car manufacturer, has finally arrived in India. The automaker opened its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday. The showroom is situated at the Maker Maxity Mall in the Bandra Kurla Complex.

The launch was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He welcomed the entry of Tesla and expressed his hope about potential future manufacturing proposals in India. Tesla also launched its Model Y electric vehicle at the launch event.

Model Y Price and Variants

Tesla will begin its India operations with the sale of the Model Y. The base version, which is the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), is priced at Rs 61.07 lakh (on-road). The long-range version costs Rs 69.15 lakh.

For comparison, here are Model Y base prices in other countries:

  • United States: $44,990 (around Rs 38.63 lakh)
  • China: 263,500 yuan (around Rs 31.57 lakh)
  • Germany: €45,970 (around Rs 46.09 lakh)

The Indian price is higher primarily because of import taxes and freight charges.

Model Y Features in India

Tesla recently drove the Model Y on Indian roads. A test unit was spotted on the Mumbai-Pune highway, capturing the attention of the public. Experts verified that it was a newer variant of the Model Y, featuring an internal code of "Juniper."

The newer version has:

  • C-shaped LED lights
  • Twin-spoke alloy wheels
  • Panoramic glass roof
  • Six color options available

Performance and Specifications

Internationally, Model Y comes with All-Wheel Drive (AWD). The long-range model has a battery for 500 to 600 km range on a single charge.

  • Acceleration: 0 to 96 km/h in 4.6 seconds
  • Top speed: 200 km/h
  • Infotainment: 15.4-inch middle touchscreen
  • Rear passenger display: 8-inch screen
  • Other features: Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and wireless phone charging

Comments by Maharashtra CM

During the showroom inauguration, CM Devendra Fadnavis informed that Tesla made the appropriate city and state choice. He pointed out that the company is renowned worldwide for its innovation and design. He added that he experienced his first Tesla car during a trip to the United States in 2015.

Up until now, Tesla has not made any statements on local production in India.
