SMS Header Suffixes Introduced To Identify Spam

New SMS Header Tags Designed to Assist Mobile Users

Telecom companies have introduced suffixes in SMS headers. The modification is designed to assist users in determining whether a message is spam or valid.

What the Suffixes Indicate

In an explanation by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COI), the suffixes precede the sender's name. The implications of the suffixes are:

  • 'P' for promotional messages
  • 'S' for service-based messages
  • ‘T’ for transactional messages
  • ‘G’ for government messages

COI’s Director General, SP Kochhar, said that this system will make it easier for users to understand the purpose of each message.

Concerns Over Internet Messaging Apps

Despite this change, COI has raised concerns. Fraudsters are using internet-based messaging apps to send deceptive messages. This raises doubts about whether anti-spam efforts are working effectively.
