Parliament Announces Debate on Army's Operation Sindoor
Parliament is set for a key discussion on Operation Sindoor, a newly launched army operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan. The opposition party asked for the debate to include the Pahalgam terror attack as well. They would like Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reply in Parliament directly.
PM Modi flew out on an international trip on Wednesday. He is slated to return on the 26th of this month. The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Rajya Sabha also convened on the same day and gave its approval for a total of 16 hours of debate. On Monday, Lok Sabha BAC had already given its nod for the same schedule. The debate will begin in the Lok Sabha on July 28 and the Rajya Sabha on July 29.
Unclear Whether Modi Will Address Debate
It is not yet certain if the Prime Minister will come or speak at the debate. A high-ranking BJP leader indicated Modi could address issues relating to terrorism while overseas. In between, Congress Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, Pramod Tiwari, stated his party requested Modi to be in Parliament. The government allegedly told them he would be available.
The Rajya Sabha BAC meeting was the inaugural meeting since the commencement of the monsoon session. It was presided over by Deputy Chairman Harivansh.
Opposition Seeks Discussion on Bihar Voter List
During the BAC, opposition parties once again insisted on a debate on the Special Incremental Revision (SIR) of the voters' list in Bihar. They moved adjournment motions and disrupted the House over and over again. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned three times before being put off until Thursday.
Speaker Om Birla Warns MPs on Disruptive Behavior
In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla sternly rebuked MPs for entering the House with placards. He added that Parliament would not tolerate street-like manners. Touching upon protests regarding the issue of Bihar voter list, he requested members to conduct themselves responsibly.
You have been elected on people's hopes," Birla told him. "Your attention must be on constructive debate and betterment of public life. Do not produce placards in here. Strict action will be taken if this is repeated."
Lok Sabha was subsequently adjourned until Thursday, after further disruptions. This was the third day running with little being done in Parliament.
