Verbal Confrontation at the United Nations
In the United Nations Security Council on Friday, there was a heated exchange between the United States and China. The U.S. requested that China halt exports of materials that can aid Russia's war efforts in Ukraine. China denied the allegations.
U.S. Expresses Concerns Over Exports
U.S. Acting Ambassador Dorothy Shea stated that certain exports are supporting Russia's military. She cited drone and missile components used on attacks against Ukraine. Shea made it clear that China's involvement in the exports could exacerbate the conflict. She warned China that if China desires peace, then China must cease supporting Russia.
China Responds Firmly
China's Deputy Ambassador Geng Shuang replied to the American accusations. According to him, China initiated no war and did not participate in it. Geng declared that China never exported lethal weapons to Russia. He emphasized that the state strictly regulates exports, including drones. Geng called upon the U.S. to cease accusing others and assist in peace initiatives instead.
Reports of Secret Weapon Shipments
Reuters previously reported that China had secretly shipped arms to Russia. The aim, the report said, was to stay away from Western sanctions. There has been no official statement from China confirming or denying these assertions.
