Oil Imports: India's Position On Russian Oil Imports

India Reacts to Western Criticism Regarding Oil Imports from Russia

Western nations have sanctioned Russia because of the ongoing war with Ukraine. But they have been complaining about India still importing oil from Russia. India has been repeatedly explaining its stand in response.

Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswamy, recently responded to these questions again. He underlined that no nation should do anything that affects its own economy.

India's Dependence on Oil Imports

In an interview with Times Radio, Doraiswamy justified India's oil dealings with Russia. He cited the fact that India is the third-biggest oil consumer in the world and that it imports 80% of its oil requirements. He wondered how India could be prevented from purchasing discounted oil from Russia and asked, "Should we switch off our economy?"

Strategic Ties and Historical Context

Doraiswamy also commented on India's historical ties with Russia. He noted that some of the Western countries during previous wars sold arms to states against which India received aid, instead of aiding India directly. On the contrary, Russia upheld consistent relations with India throughout all these years.

Accusations of Double Standards

The High Commissioner indicated the double standards adopted by certain nations. He stated that those countries who are telling India to leave importing something are themselves importing rare minerals and oil from those same nations. He questioned whether India should begin inquiring about their motives.
