UK Warns Israel Against Ceasefire
The United Kingdom warned Israel that it could recognize Palestine as a sovereign state if Israel fails to endorse a ceasefire in Gaza. The warning was issued before the United Nations General Assembly session planned for September.
Israel Resoundingly Rejects UK Stand
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attacked the UK policy. He claimed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was rewarding what he termed as Hamas terrorist activities. Netanyahu claimed Palestinian statehood recognition would punish the victims of Hamas and present future security threats to Britain.
Netanyahu Opposes Recognition of Palestinian State
Netanyahu cautioned that Palestinian statehood recognition, particularly on Israel's borders, could be perilous. He further stated that appeasing terror groups would not succeed and this action could have a boomerang effect on Britain as well.
International Pressure Builds for Ceasefire
Keir Starmer indicated the UK would support Palestinian statehood at the UN in case Israel refuses a ceasefire. In addition to this, Hamas has demanded hostages are released and both sides sign a ceasefire and disarm.
France Also Backs Palestinian Recognition
French President Emmanuel Macron recently announced that France is prepared to recognize Palestine as a state. This action was heavily criticized by Israel and America.
Families of Hostages Express Concern
Hostage families in Gaza have protested against European support for recognizing Palestine. According to them, such actions encourage terrorism and do not contribute to peace. They also feel it is against international law.
