Shashi Tharoor: India Should Prioritize Its Interests In Response To US Tariff Hike

Tharoor Lobbies Against Tariffs During Trade Negotiations

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that it is an inappropriate time for the US to increase 25% tariffs and other penalties on Indian imports. He said this while speaking to reporters outside Parliament on Thursday, adding the remark is inappropriate since trade negotiations are ongoing.

India's US Exports in Jeopardy

Tharoor indicated that the United States is India's largest trade market with exports worth approximately $87-90 billion. According to him, the US President invoked Russia-based trade as a justification for imposing new tariffs. Tharoor considers this action to be an effort to get leverage through negotiations.

Economic Impact and National Interest

According to Tharoor, if India's exports decline due to these new tariffs, it could harm the economy and reduce GDP. He criticized the US demands, calling them unreasonable. He emphasized that India has the right to protect its economic interests and should not compromise its position to satisfy external pressures.

Tariffs Effective August 1

Tharoor expressed faith in India's strategy in handling the issue. He said that how things go from here is subject to negotiations. He urged the Indian government to stand firm on the nation's interests, instead of succumbing to international pressures.

The 25% tariffs will be effective starting August 1. Trump reiterated that the decision is unrelated to any trade agreement between India and Russia. He also accused India of maintaining some of the highest tariffs globally, repeating past criticism.
