Fugitives Sighted in Public at India-England Test
Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi, who were both charge-sheeted for financial offenses against Indian banks, have been staying in the United Kingdom. They had recently witnessed the India vs. England Test match at London. At the event, they took pictures with former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle, who used to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Social Media Activity and Public Appearance
Lalit Modi tweeted that he had attended the game with his girlfriend Reema Bowri, Vijay Mallya, and a few friends. He also tweeted photographs of himself with former cricketer Farooq Engineer and Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove. Modi and Mallya were spotted at a resort function in London one month prior. Videos from the event included them dancing and singing, and those videos were widely shared on the Internet.
Legality Issues Involving Vijay Mallya
Vijay Mallya is accused of the Kingfisher Airlines loan default case. He had departed from India in March 2016 and has been staying in Britain ever since. The Indian government had been seeking his extradition. Recently, Mallya moved a petition before the Karnataka High Court. Mallya alleged that Indian banks had overcharged him by much more than the actual amount of the loan and sought from the court permission to produce his account books.
