Trump Aims to Raise Tariffs on India
Ex-U.S. President Donald Trump declared that Indian imports will see a sharp increase in tariffs in the next 24 hours. While in a recent interview with a global news agency, Trump condemned India for its trade behavior and Russian oil imports.
India Charged with Backing Russia
Trump explained India is purchasing huge quantities of oil from Russia, which he feels finances the war against Ukraine. He added that this is one of the reasons why tariffs have been increased. He stated that India heavily trades with America, but asserts that the trade relationship is not equitable.
"India is a bad trading partner. They trade very much with us, but we do not gain equally. We already charged a 25 percent tariff. It will be raised more within the next 24 hours. This is due to the fact that they keep on importing oil from Russia," Trump said.
India's Response to Criticism
India has dismissed American and European criticism of its oil exports to Russia. It wondered why the U.S. is still importing Russian materials for use in nuclear, electric vehicles, and fertilizer production, while it is protesting against imports by India.
Russia Responds to American Pressure on India
Russia also reacted to the American stand. It denounced Washington for imposing pressure on India in trade matters. Russia stated that any independent country is entitled to decide on its trade partners on its own.
