Rahul Gandhi Questions Modi's Silence On Trump's Tariff Threats

Trump Threatens Tariffs on India Again

Former U.S. President Donald Trump once again threatened to impose sharply higher tariffs on Indian merchandise. According to him, India has not played the role of a responsible trading partner, particularly because it continues to do business with Russia. Trump stated he would levy a 25% tariff and other penalties.

India responded by rejecting these remarks. Officials pointed out that the U.S. also imports from Russia, including chemicals and fertilizers. They argued that blaming India alone is unfair.

Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Modi’s Response

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not speaking out against Trump’s repeated tariff threats. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying Modi stayed silent because of an investigation involving businessman Adani in the U.S.

Rahul stated that people in India should understand the connection between Modi’s silence and business ties. He referred to “AA,” pointing at Adani and Ambani, and claimed that financial details of Russian oil deals would soon be exposed. He said Modi had "tied his hands" in this situation.

Opposition Increases Pressure on Modi

The opposition continues to criticize Modi’s handling of U.S.-India relations. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that Modi’s “hug diplomacy” with Trump has failed. He stressed that the Prime Minister should take a clear stand on U.S. threats.
