The Israeli security cabinet has sanctioned a plan to completely take control of Gaza. The move is a turning point in the almost 22 months conflict. The action has been criticized by foreign governments and Israeli political leaders.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted to the critics. On X, he wrote that his strategy is not to occupy Gaza. He added that the aim is to dislodge Hamas from power. He clarified that the plan involves the setting up of a civilian government. It will not comprise Palestinian officials associated with Hamas or any other militant organisation. He further added that the move is meant to secure the freedom of hostages kidnapped by Hamas. He also indicated that Gaza can no longer threaten Israel.
The cabinet has come up with a five-point plan to bring the Gaza war to an end. The decision has been criticized by nations like Britain, China, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Belgium. Germany has also declared that they will not be providing military equipment to Israel for this conflict. This decision was criticized by Netanyahu. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also cautioned the plan. He stated that it may further deteriorate the already grave humanitarian crisis among Palestinians. Official reports confirm that the UN Security Council will sit on Sunday to address the situation.
Within Israel, opinions are split. Hostage families in the hands of Hamas opposed the plan, describing it as irresponsible. There is support for the move from among some citizens. According to reports, 49 people are currently being held hostage by Hamas. Hamas has also described the Israeli plan as a crime, referring to the proposal to conquer Gaza City and uproot its inhabitants.
