Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine will not sacrifice any of its territory to achieve peace. He made the remarks following US President Donald Trump's suggestion that any future peace agreement with Russia could include land exchanges.
Trump Plans Meeting with Putin
Donald Trump has posted on his Truth Social that he will be meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. Trump indicated that he was hopeful of securing a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Trump stated that the deal may involve land swaps, but he did not indicate which territories could be exchanged or what would happen after the trade.
First, Trump proposed a trilateral summit with both Putin and Zelensky in Alaska. The proposal was said to have been made by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff when he visited Russia recently. The Kremlin has remained mum ever since. Now, Trump is said to plan to meet Putin first to get his approval to sign a ceasefire agreement.
Zelensky Rejects the Idea of Land Swaps
President Zelensky spoke firmly against any talks that would alter Ukraine's borders. He underlined the fact that Ukraine should be a part of all the peace negotiations. According to him, Ukraine cannot cede land to an aggressor and threatened that agreements reached without Ukraine would not be real solutions.
Zelensky termed such proposals as ineffective and anti-peace, adding that they would not solve the fundamental issues of the war.
