Rahul Gandhi’s Statement
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi responded to the Supreme Court directive to relocate stray dogs in Delhi and NCR to shelters. He termed society as moving backwards sans science and humanity. He clarified stray dogs are not a serious social issue. He disagreed with their total elimination. He recommended having shelters, sterilizing, and vaccinating dogs locally to safeguard people while having them remain in the community.
Actor Adivi Sesh's Letter
Actor Adivi Sesh wrote to Chief Justice Gavai asking him to review the order on stray dogs. He also wrote to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Several animal rights groups opposed the decision.
Maneka Gandhi’s Objection
Animal rights activist and former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi referred to the order as unrealistic. She stated Delhi has approximately 3 lakh stray dogs and would require 3,000 shelters. She asked if the Delhi government could commit ₹15,000 crore to this.
Supreme Court's Position
The Supreme Court was alarmed by fatalities due to dog bites and attacks, as well as rabies. On Monday, it directed the authorities to relocate stray dogs to shelters in out-of-the-way locations. The court informed that it will only hear the central government's case on the issue. It won't entertain appeals from animal rights activists and other parties. The court declared the decision made in the public interest.
