Putin Thanks Kim Ahead Of Trump Meeting

Trump's Peace Strides

US President Donald Trump is seeking to sign a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. As part of that effort, he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. In preparation for this, Putin had phone talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to North Korean state media.

Putin–Kim Cooperation

The two leaders reportedly agreed to enhance their bilateral relations. Putin expressed appreciation to Kim for deploying troops to battle Kiev. He commended their courage and sacrifice. Russian reports also touched on their coordination in taking the Kursk region. Russian media reported that Putin disclosed information about the intended meeting with Trump during the phone call.

There have been closer ties between Russia and North Korea in recent times. Russia has been provided with troops and arms from North Korea. The two countries had a major defense pact signed last year.

Donetsk Dispute

After his meetings with Trump, Putin allegedly offered to transfer the remaining 30% of Donetsk controlled by Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not accept this offer. He stated that Ukraine would not cede the territory, as it could be used for future Russian military actions. Zelensky criticized Putin for attempting to overpower Ukraine. He is also trying to talk to Trump prior to Trump meeting with Putin.

Planned Alaska Meeting

Putin and Trump will be meeting on August 15 in Alaska. Trump had hoped that a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine would be reached during the negotiations. Trump suggested that the agreement could be territorial swaps. Zelensky vehemently opposed such proposals, and according to him, Ukraine would never agree to any arrangement that compromises its territorial integrity.
