Jaishankar To Travel To Moscow For Bilateral Discussions

Background of the Visit

India has been warned by the United States to discontinue Russian oil purchases, which are under Western sanctions. If India fails to do so, the US will impose higher taxation on Indian exports.

It has been confirmed from official sources that Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will be on a visit to Russia on the 20th and 21st of this month. He will hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the visit regarding bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is also in Moscow for official discussions.

India–Russia Relations

In spite of US tariff warnings, India is further consolidating its alliance with Russia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently had a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Both leaders talked about:

  • Enhancing bilateral coordination
  • Promoting investment and commerce
  • Solving economic challenges

These issues were confirmed by official announcements from New Delhi and Moscow.

Putin also brought Modi up to speed on the Ukraine conflict. Modi again emphasized that problems must be solved through peaceful talks. He also indicated his desire to welcome Putin on his scheduled trip to India later this year.

International Diplomacy

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet US President Donald Trump on the 15th of this month. Their discussion will include:

  • Diplomatic relations
  • The Ukraine war
  • Trade agreements

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could also attend this meeting.
