Raids Under Operation Namakkur
Actors Dulquer Salmaan and Prithviraj Sukumaran's homes were raided by Customs officials on Tuesday. This is part of a probe into suspected smuggling of luxury cars.
Government officials have confirmed the raids at Prithviraj's residences in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram and that of Dulquer's Panampilli Nagar residence. Raids were also carried out in other regions of Kerala, such as Kochi, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. There were no luxury cars that broke customs laws seized at the actor's places, reports state.
Luxury Cars Smuggling Allegations
Intelligence reports that some luxury cars were sold by the Bhutanese Army. The agents bought the cars at cheap prices and then smuggled them into India without clearing customs.
The cars are said to have entered India via Himachal Pradesh and were transported to temporary locations. They were allegedly retailed to favored customers, primarily in the film industry and business communities.
Investigation In Progress
Bhutanese customs officers are verifying receipts and documents accompanying the cars imported from Bhutan. Loopholes in India-Bhutan trade norms are suspected to have facilitated the vehicles' border crossing without checks, according to officials.
