Feature Overview
Meta-owned WhatsApp has rolled out a new message translation feature. Users can now access messages in their preferred language. Voice message transcription was also introduced by WhatsApp last year, and now once again the new update is meant to simplify communication. WhatsApp claims that the feature shatters language barriers.
Availability
The translation feature will be implemented on one-on-one chats, group chats, and channels. It's being rolled out to Android and iOS users.
- Android: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic.
- iOS: It can be translated in the 19 languages.
It is releasing it step by step, so everyone will receive it soon.
How It Works
- To translate a message, long-press on it.
- Tap the Translate option.
- Choose the language you prefer.
- On Android, you can have automatic translation, which automatically translates messages that come in.
Privacy and Technology
The translation is done over the phone. WhatsApp ensured that it neither reads the messages nor saves them. The feature also represents WhatsApp's follow-up on AI integration. Other languages will be added to the updates in the future.
