Unconventional Flight Route
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flew to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Flight figures indicated that his aircraft, Wings of Zion, took an unconventional air route. Rather than taking a flight over Central Europe, the plane traversed the Mediterranean Sea, flew over Greece and Italy, and entered the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar. Aviation analysts stated that the flight was approximately 373 miles and included additional flying time.
Reason Behind Route Change
The International Criminal Court (ICC) in November 2024 issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charged in relation to the Gaza war. Netanyahu may get arrested if he travels to ICC member countries. The majority of the European countries are members of the ICC. Ireland promised that it would arrest Netanyahu if he visited. France said that it will not detain him, but Italy said that it was still weighing the matter. Due to this risk, Netanyahu might have used a less dangerous but longer route.
Upcoming Interactions
Netanyahu will be speaking to the UN General Assembly on Friday (U.S. time). Then, he is off to Washington. Reports reveal that he is to see U.S. President Donald Trump next week.
