Powerful Quake Rocks Central Area

A powerful earthquake hit the central Philippines on Tuesday evening. The earthquake had a Richter scale reading of 6.9. It had its epicenter in the city of Bogo, 17 kilometers from Bogo City in Cebu province.

Casualties and Injuries

More than 69 individuals have lost their lives. Fourteen were reported to have died in Bogo City alone. The officials predict the number of fatalities to increase. There were landslides in many areas following the quakes. Some of the victims perished at the accident scenes, while others were rushed to hospitals. The National Disaster Management Agency has confirmed that 147 were injured. The agency further indicated that the figure could rise.

Damage and Rescue Efforts

Six fatalities were reported by Vice Mayor Alfie Reyes in San Remigio town. They were three coastguard personnel and firefighters. In Bogo City, roads and houses were damaged. Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities are trying to assist affected communities.

Tsunami Warnings

Tsunami warnings were issued shortly after the earthquake by the authorities. Citizens in the coastal areas of Leyte, Cebu, and Biliran were instructed to move to safe zones. These warnings were lifted later once the danger had passed.
