The 64-year-old expert was a Department of War contractor since 2001, U.S. Attorney Lindsay Halligan reported. He is charged with illegal possession of documents containing national defense information. During the raid on his residences, detectives uncovered more than one thousand "Secret" and "Top Secret" documents.
Tellers reportedly asked a government colleague to make copies of classified documents recently, officials say. The documents reportedly included information about the military capabilities of the U.S. Air Force. Officials say the move violated federal security protocols.

Federal authorities assert that Tellis encountered Chinese authorities many times in recent years. Reports indicate that he held private dinner meetings with Beijing leaders in 2022 and on 11 April 2023. At one of these sessions, he reportedly received a gift package from Chinese delegations. Information on what was contained therein and why he was given it remains to be investigated.
Current Legal Process
The U.S. Justice Department confirmed that the case remains under consideration. Tellis, if convicted, could face 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Representatives emphasized that protecting classified defense information continues to be a priority for national security.
