Russia Continues to Supply Oil to India
Russia continues to ship crude oil to Indian refineries despite the warning from the United States. India imports oil from different countries, but Russia is its largest exporter. Statistics by global trade analytics platform Kpler show that Moscow supplied 34 percent of India's crude oil imports last September. India imported an average of 4.5 million barrels per day from Russia last September. This represents a 10 percent decrease from the last month's volume.
Monthly Import Trends
India imported approximately 70,000 barrels more than the August figure, though in general there was not much change from the same period last year. Russia was the top supplier with 1.6 million barrels per day, maintaining its 34 percent share in India's oil imports. Statistics by Kpler also showed that from January to August this year, India's average import of oil from Russia fell by 180,000 barrels a day. This was due to market challenges and not pressure from America.
Russia's Role in India's Oil Market
Russia has been India's largest supplier of crude oil for years. Despite recent warnings from the U.S. President Donald Trump, trade between the two countries continues unabated. In July, India imported oil worth $3.6 billion (around ₹31,775 crore) from Russia. Currently, Russia supplies 34 percent of India's total oil imports, followed by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
